From 265 AD when Sima Yan proclaimed himself emperor and the establishment of the Western Jin Dynasty, to 589 AD when the Sui Dynasty destroyed the Chen Dynasty, China experienced a long period of chaos and disorder, known in history as the Two Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties periods.
