I Quit My Job, and Then the Yangtze Woke Up

By day, Su Ye is bullied by his boss. By night, he ferries the dead across the Yangtze. After seven years as a corporate drone, he finally flips the table and quits in Chapter 3. His resignation letter contains just one line of code:

if(leader=="Zhou Mingyuan"){return"I'm done";}

The moment he sends it, the ferrying bead around his neck shatters. The old stone is an heirloom: for three thousand years, the ferrymen of the Yangtze have used it to guide the dead and suppress whatever lies beneath the river. In his palm, the fragments turn into a key engraved with one character: "End." A faint whisper comes from the shards: "Seven... generations... finally..." Then it says four more words: "Forty-nine days."

Su Ye is the seventh generation. And the last.

Before quitting, he thought his greatest battle would be Monday morning's meeting. After he quits, seven lamps beneath the river begin to go out: the countdown to the seal holding back an ancient god. An old man in burial clothes smiles at him beneath a streetlight. The owner of a ghost internet cafe tells him, "The day your master died, someone wearing burial clothes came out of the riverbed." A construction site below an office building breaks through the seal. The thing that has slept beneath the Yangtze for three thousand years is about to awaken.

But Su Ye has already quit. He has forty-nine days, a sharp-tongued spirit artifact, and the mess left behind by the previous six generations of ferrymen.

"People can work 996. Souls can't."

One corporate drone's resignation, one great river's fate. When the last lamp goes out, he won't be saving the Yangtze. He'll be making the Yangtze wake up on its own.
