The Poor Scholar Holds the Jade Scepter

In the final years of the Northern Wei, the Heyin Incident stained the Yellow River with blood. Great clans sat high above, while commoners were treated like grass.

Su Che was the son of a low-ranking clerk in the household registry office. His father was crushed to death by the great clans for auditing farmland.

He burned the charity letter that read, “You may take our surname and join our family.”

Then he turned and walked into the county office where his father had fallen.

Others courted the great clans. He dissected them.

Others studied the classics. He delved into the law, land systems, taxes, and military strategy.

Others flattered the powerful at banquets. He devised plans among the stacks of case files.

When the Cui clan of Qinghe wove a vast network with a century of connections, he tapped a copy of the Equal-Field Order and said, “This net violates regulations in seven places.”

When the Lu clan of Fanyang used marriage ties to monopolize official posts, he submitted the Six Articles of Edict: “If officials are chosen for their ability, why should marriage ties matter?”

When Dugu Xin led a hundred thousand cavalrymen and tried to use military power to force others into submission, Su Che spread out the roster of the fubing militia. “General, thirty percent of your troops already fall under my new system.”

From the county office in Luoyang to the Western Wei court, from a low-born clerk to Minister of Personnel.

He formed no factions, pursued no private gain, fawned on no one, and never changed his surname.

He did only three things:

He opened a path to advancement for commoners,

set a fair standard for all under heaven,

and rewrote the rules of a world that devoured its people.

At last, he stood before the newly built Hall of Supreme Polarity in the Northern Zhou. Behind him stood the Zhou Code, the fubing system, and the beginnings of the imperial examination system, all of his own design.

The great clans bowed their heads, and the Xianbei nobles lowered their eyes.

The new emperor, Yuwen Jue, bowed and asked, “Lord Su, how should the realm be governed?”

Su Che looked toward the countless poor scholars outside the hall.

“The old measure weighed people and sorted them into high and low. Today, I will forge a new scale for all under heaven.”

“From now on, appointments will be based on ability, not birth.”

The greatest reversal in the world is not for a commoner to become emperor.

It is for commoners to reach the heights of power without ever needing to become emperors.
