The Five Dynasties: Old Debts and Broken Lands

On the outskirts of the Huai River front in the Later Zhou campaign against Southern Tang, Xu Che, a minor clerk in Cangzhen, is sent to account for the grain on the day the city falls and its banners change. The books list thirty thousand shi, but the granary is nearly empty. A three-day deadline to deliver the grain hangs over him. Former prefectural office clerks are desperate to pass the blame, while the new army cares only about results. If Xu Che admits he was “negligent,” he becomes a ready-made scapegoat. If he refuses, he must dig his own way out of the mess in the rotten ledgers.

From a torn-out page in an old register to laborers listed as dead who are “still breathing”; from empty boats and mismatched vouchers at the northern ferry to medicine accounts overlapping with grain accounts in the dead of night, Xu Che gradually sees the truth: this is no mere grain-theft case, but an entire system that renames military provisions, writes living people down as dead, and wipes away all responsibility.

Liu Qiniang, Han Ji, Cao Zhubu, and Liang Shichang are drawn into the affair one after another, each calculating how to survive in a chaotic age. Xu Che must constantly choose between military deadlines, the safety of living witnesses, and preserving the integrity of the evidence: should he hand over one person to buy a moment of peace, or expose the entire chain of old accounts and write more people back into the human world from “outside the books”?

After twenty-five years of upheaval and changing banners, the tide of history cannot be turned. Yet in the cracks between mountains and rivers, ordinary people still ask one question: when everyone says this is the safest way, can the rules still be trusted?
