In 1840, after the Opium War began, he was dismissed due to the British invasion. In 1841, he went to Zhejiang to co-organize coastal defense, and was later exiled to Ili. In 1845, he was re-appointed governor of Shaanxi and Gansu, and was transferred to governor of Shaanxi the following year. In 1847, he was promoted to governor of Yunnan and Guizhou. In 1849, he resigned and returned home due to illness. In 1850, he was ordered to serve as an imperial envoy and went to Guangxi to suppress the peasant uprising. He died in the Puning County Hall in Chaozhou on the way.
