The Ferry Beneath the Birch Trees

This is an epic spanning sixty-four years and telling the stories of nine lives.

It begins on a snowy night in 1976 in the forests of the northern frontier and ends at a ferry crossing on the banks of the Shen River in 2040. Qiao Yu, Lu Xingci, Zhou Chengjun, Lin Yuan... Nine children born in the forest region go their separate ways in the tide of the times. Some enter office towers, some are trapped on construction sites, and some disappear beyond distant mountains. None of them is a hero, and none is a failure. They are simply people doing their best to live.

The novel's most moving power comes from the moments when things are left unsaid: the hand that fell on a face just before a grandfather breathed his last, a mother's departing silhouette waving from a train platform, the words Zhou Chengjun spoke as he crouched on the doorstep, "Once you've given it a name, it's even harder to let go," and the two words on the note Yin Wei left before she went away: "Wait for me." Twenty-four years later, she returned, but only in passing.

This is not a story celebrating success, but an attempt to understand the ordinary. With precise details, restrained prose, and a quiet tenderness, the author gives every character a life and warmth of their own. When Qiao Yu finally stands at a calligraphy exhibition, looking at the four characters his wife wrote, "At peace wherever the heart finds home," he suddenly understands: striving has never been about how far one person can go, but about one generation ferrying the next to the other side of the river.
