The All-Rounder Oxford Rejected

The day Oxford rejected me, Newton handed me a secret letter: “Welcome to the Observer Game. Reality is the wager.” I am Edmond Halley, the unluckiest astronomy prodigy in history. A transit of Mercury reveals visions of the future, a comet’s orbit conceals a code for time, and even my pocket watch runs backward! Newton drops his disguise: “Science is a lie. The universe is being edited.” Worse still, my beloved wife, Mary, is an “anchor” sent by the editors to spy on me. I kept my head down for fifty years, working as the Astronomer Royal by day and using mathematical formulas to crack the world’s source code by night. On the night the comet returned in 1758, they gave me an ultimatum: become an editor and live forever, or disappear forever with the truth. I opened A Synopsis of the Astronomy of Comets and triggered the back door I had hidden for humanity: I encoded forbidden knowledge into a subject taught around the world.
