A Sunny Day Like a Song

Seventy-five years have passed since the first edition of Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex was published, but women’s lives have not changed much. As a single mother, Liang Qingtian must weather the storms of her career while also dealing with the ridiculous blind dates her family arranges for her. Her friend Su Yan is stunningly beautiful but refuses to take shortcuts, yet she still can’t escape the headaches caused by powerful, domineering men circling around her. Xue Xiaoding is a bona fide rich second-generation heiress, but she can’t freely choose her own life either, because her family wants her to find a man who can benefit the clan. In the eyes of the world, it seems women can’t make it on their own. They have to rely on marriage, on men. It seems that as long as a woman wins a man’s affection, she can live worry-free for the rest of her life. Gao Xin believed exactly that, and lived accordingly, but what happened to her proved it was a lie woven by the older generation. Some say men conquer women by conquering the world, while women conquer the world by conquering men. There’s a song that goes, “How sad for a woman if no one loves her. I really do hope someone will come after me.” Look around: society tells women to love and to win men’s love, but never to love themselves. Why must women rely on men to gain the world’s recognition? Why must women make love the greatest challenge of their lives? The world is so vast, and women can be just as independent and responsible as men. If you care about women’s awakening and growth, join us as we see how Liang Qingtian and her friends become the leading women in their own lives. This story is full of quotable lines and occasional bouts of wild madness. Read at your own discretion!
