"Dreams in the South Garden" takes the love between Emperor Xuan of the Han Dynasty Liu Xun and Xu Pingjun as the main line, telling the eternal story of "the deep love between old swords" in the middle of the Western Han Dynasty. In the last years of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, Liu Bing, the grandson of Prince Wei, had lived among the people and married Xu Pingjun, the daughter of Xu Guanghan. The two got married in Nanyuan. Although they were poor, they loved each other. In the first year of Yuanping, the powerful minister Huo Guang welcomed Liu Bing as emperor. Faced with the pressure from the Huo family to make their daughter Huo Chengjun their queen, Emperor Xuan issued the edict of "The Love of the Old Sword" and made Xu Pingjun his queen despite all objections. Her frugality in holding the palace contrasted with Huo's arrogance and extravagance, which offended Huo Guang's wife Huo Xian. In the third year of Dijie, Huo Xian bribed the female doctor Chunyu Yan to kill Xu Pingjun, who was weak after childbirth. He was only nineteen years old. Emperor Xuan was forbearing on the surface and appointed Huo Chengjun as his queen, but in fact he was secretly planning it. After Huo Guang's death, he gradually took back power. In the fourth year of Dijie, he killed the entire Huo family who had rebelled and deposed Huo Chengjun. Xu Pingjun was given the posthumous title "Gong Ai", which means "respectful and virtuous, which makes me mourn for the rest of my life." Afterwards, Emperor Xuan initiated the "Xiaoxuan Zhongxing" and established Liu Shi, his son by Xu Pingjun, as the crown prince. Huanglong died in the first year of his life, and his posthumous edict and Xu Pingjun were buried together in Duling South Park, fulfilling their vow of "live in the same quilt and die in the same cave". The second half of the series shows the influence of his spirit on later generations - Ban Gu's "Book of Han" records his virtues in detail, literati of the past dynasties chanted them, and the people guarded the tomb. The camera finally traveled to modern times, and Duling South Garden became a holy place of love. The whole play uses the theme of "True love transcends power, and true love never changes despite poverty", composing a love epic of the Chinese nation.
