The Yongjia Rebellion and Yiguan's journey to the south brought not only the dust from the north, but also the "unspeakable things" awakening in the darkness. They are not foreign gods from overseas, but "local filth" deeply rooted in China's ancient mountains, rivers, etiquette, and human obsessions. The protagonist Huan Xiang is a child of a declining family of historians in Nandu. He is forced to take over the family's most bizarre responsibility: using specially made "dirty ink" and "bone slips" to record and seal the "weird stories about rules" that are aggravated by troubled times and distorted by people's hearts. He discovered that the so-called "folk taboos" are actually fragile laws that coexist with "filth" summarized by predecessors with blood and tears. The machinations of powerful families, the confrontation between Buddhism and Taoism, the wailing of refugees, and even a casual conversation or a song of Guangling San may become media that nourish "filth" or trigger "rules". From the elegant clothes of Jiankang to the wild temples in Jingxiang; from the shadows of the past under the ruins of Luoyang to the strange fishing customs on the islands in the East China Sea... Huan Xiang is recording and also seeking to survive. He gradually understands that in this world where humans and ghosts are indistinguishable and where etiquette and music are broken, the greatest terror is not the "filth" itself, but the human heart, driven by the desire for power and despair, which actively seeks power from "filth" or uses "rules" to compete with each other. This is a dark epic that uses historical writing to describe evil spirits and uses monsters to talk about their rise and fall. The horror is not outside the window, but in the depths of people's hearts; rules are not shackles, but the last, crumbling order in troubled times.
