How Did Humans Get Mixed up Like This?

Human beings are the primates of all things and the only masters of the world. Other beings either bowed their heads and exposed their bellies and became human pets; or they were raised as livestock and dedicated their flesh and fur; the rest could only fend for themselves in the wilderness and follow the most primitive laws of nature. Human beings are superior, of course. But here, everything is turned upside down. Elves, dwarves, vampires... These beings who should be crawling or hiding dare to sit on an equal footing with humans, share wisdom, and even fight against each other. They are not pets, not livestock, but enemies - proud, tenacious enemies who can think and kill. Every time he fought, every time he saw the coldness and determination in the eyes of those inhuman things that were no different from his own, Richard felt an almost instinctive resentment in his heart.
