Great Tang: I Am Xue Pinggui, and From the Start I Refuse to Save Wang Baochuan

One day, he awoke from a dream.

To his astonishment, he had become Xue Pinggui, the man destined to save Wang Baochuan during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang.

Knowing how the story went, he smiled.

Everyone said that some of Wang Baochuan’s suffering was caused by Xue Pinggui.

But no one ever said that all of Xue Pinggui’s suffering came from Wang Baochuan.

So when Wang Baochuan was in danger, he calmly chose to stand by and do nothing.

A hopeless romantic?

Let someone else save her!

He turned and walked away, waiting only for the palace envoy to come and restore his rightful identity as a prince.

Back in the imperial family, he advanced cautiously, step by step.

On the night he became Crown Prince, Xue Pinggui spread out a map of the Tang Empire and fell into deep thought.

The great clans were entrenched at court like tumors?

The imperial examinations were nothing but a game for the powerful families?

Then… he would flip the table.

Xue Pinggui found the son of a salt peddler who had failed the examinations time and again. He placed a dagger and a history book before him.

“Huang Chao, getting into Chang’an is too hard.”

“Why not… fight your way into Chang’an?”

After that, Xue Pinggui gave Huang Chao military manuals, taught him how to make gunpowder, and opened the granaries of the great clans to him.

Three years later,

Huang Chao’s rebel army had razed the estates of the Five Great Clans and Seven Noble Houses.

Xue Pinggui led the army to put down the rebellion, then accepted Huang Chao’s surrender at court.

On the day of his coronation,

Xue Pinggui stood atop Chang’an’s city wall, with the newly completed Imperial Academy of Science and Technology behind him.

“My loyal ministers, from this day forward, ”

“I will build railways stretching from north to south, light Chang’an with electric lamps, and send ironclad ships patrolling the seas.”

“Wherever the sun and moon shine, wherever rivers flow, all shall be the territory of my Great Tang.”

“This age must learn to live a different way!”
