The Dreamweaver's Trial

On the eve of an artificial intelligence conference, Zhou Lan, a red-team scientist at the verification center, accidentally discovers that the core system, “Guanlan-Alpha,” is not truly reasoning. Its answers have been altered by “whitelist templates.” She tries to submit a report on the vulnerability, but it is repeatedly deleted and suppressed. Under immense pressure, Lin Zhan, the blue-team lead, chooses to submit a falsified “clean version” of the report to protect the project and his own career. Between truth and lies, the scientists' conscience collides head-on with their material interests. At the conference, under the glare of the global livestream, Zhou Lan risks launching “hash verification” and exposes the contamination and tampering within the system. In an instant, the credibility of the entire project is shattered, followed by a backlash from capital, power, and the media. This is a story about trust in technology and ethical choices. It shows how scientists make choices between institutional pressure and conscience, and asks: if the future of artificial intelligence is built on black boxes and falsehoods, can humanity truly rely on it? In the end, Zhou Lan and a group of young researchers choose to build a new platform for “transparent verification” beyond the shadows, kindling a faint but steadfast light.
