His consciousness was forcibly dragged back to reality like a shipwreck. Wu Ming woke up in severe pain and chaos, and found himself in a giant warehouse filled with disinfectant water and a strange smell of corruption. What greeted him was Otto, a sea otter supervisor who wore a well-tailored pinstripe suit and a scarlet bow tie and could communicate telepathically. Otto offers him a gruesome employment contract on behalf of the Multiverse Janitorial Service (M. J. S.): To become an on-site cleaning specialist responsible for cleaning up "anomalous residues." These "stains" include derivatives of the Old Ones, conceptual pollution, rule-bending products, and other horrific existences that are enough to drive mortals crazy or destroy reality. Or something even dirtier... Wu Ming was selected because he had a rare "resistance" to a certain type of pollution. With no other choice, he signed a life-long contract filled with cold terms such as "limb regeneration at his own expense" and "mental injury pension shall refer to the Cthulhu system work-related injury appraisal standards".
