The Lucky Concubine

My father tricked my mother into becoming his broodmare. Her repeated pregnancies provoked my legitimate mother’s jealousy, and she died in childbirth along with her unborn children. To earn a reputation for virtue, my legitimate mother reluctantly left me in the household to fend for myself. My father had no more children after that, so he poured all his paternal love into my legitimate older sister and helped her become the Crown Princess. But years into her marriage to the Crown Prince, she still had no children, earning the displeasure of the Emperor and Empress. So she took the initiative and brought me into the household as a concubine, expecting me to bear her a child and help her keep her husband’s favor. I inherited my mother’s natural fertility, so getting pregnant was the easiest thing in the world. Before long, she would learn what it meant to let a wolf into the house.
