Tales of the Strange in Blue

Blue-Robed Tales of the Strange is a novel by Xu San the Commoner, set in Muwan, east of Shanyang County in the old Huai'an Prefecture. It tells a series of gripping tales of the uncanny.

At the start of the story, we follow the protagonist to Majiadang, a remote place far from the main roads and crisscrossed by waterways. This desolate spot becomes the starting point for many bizarre events. Chang Si, the protagonist, shows remarkable intelligence and courage from the moment he first ventures out into the world. When faced with one strange incident after another, he not only averts disaster but also displays resourcefulness and steadfast conviction at crucial moments.

As the story unfolds, we gradually learn about the customs and character of the Muwan region. There is the mysterious figure of a woman in blue, the tragic tale of an old softshell turtle's death, and the strange sight of a ten-zhang figure made from a hundred bamboo poles. Every story is full of mystery and wonder. In them, we also find reflections on human virtue and vice, the cycle of life and death, and the struggle between good and evil.

As the protagonist searches for the truth, he meets all kinds of people. Some are kind and unassuming, others treacherous and cunning; some are fearless, while others are weak and cowardly. Their distinct personalities make the story all the richer.

In this novel, the author deftly blends reality with fantasy, making the story feel grounded while also filling it with the fantastic. As they read, readers can experience the conflicts and contradictions of real life while also savoring the mystery and allure of a fantastical world.
