There is a folk proverb, "There are three hardships in life: blacksmithing, punting, and making tofu." Among the three major hardships, blacksmithing ranks first, which shows how difficult it is for people who engage in this profession. Blacksmithing is a primitive forging process. The blacksmith was once one of the eight major craftsmen in the countryside and one of the important and vivid elements that constitute rural society. Through the life of blacksmith Wang Xinhua, this article describes how a traditional rural craftsman thrives in this land through his own efforts.
