Ding Damao's grandfather, Ding Deyu, fled from the northwest to southern Jiangsu. Settled down in a land temple at the foot of Maoshan Mountain. In order to support his family, Ding Deyu opened up wasteland and planted grapes. Not only do they grow grapes, but they also make wine. Ding Deyu has four children. They were named Ding Zhongchun, Zhongxia, Zhongqiu and Zhongdong respectively. The village where the Ding family lives was renamed Dingzhuang Village. Ding Damao's father is Ding Zhongxia, the second oldest child. Because he had a large black birthmark under his neck when he was born, he was named "Xia Hei".
