We're Remarried

Many people grew up listening to their parents argue day after day. So they quietly promised themselves that their own marriages would never be like that, full of fighting. Tian Xin was one of them. After graduating from college, she did what most young women do: got a job and fell in love. Ji De was her boyfriend, a video game programmer. They got married before they even made it through the honeymoon phase of their relationship. Then they began arguing over all sorts of little things. With every argument, Tian Xin became more and more like her parents. “Ji De, I can’t live like this anymore. Let’s get divorced!” Like most women, when she said “divorce,” she only hoped her partner would change for the better. Ji De knew that too, so he never actually agreed, no matter how often they fought. Until one day, before Tian Xin could say “divorce,” he held up their marriage certificate and said: “Let’s get divorced.” So the two of them went to the civil affairs bureau and finalized their divorce. … A month later, Ji De suddenly appeared in front of Tian Xin, just as he had when they first met. “Hey, don’t tell me you’re busy today.” Confused and annoyed, Tian Xin demanded, “What game are you playing? We’re divorced.” Ji De froze for a moment, as if something had just come back to him. Then he gave an awkward laugh, said, “Just kidding,” and left. But the next day, and the day after that… Every day after, he repeated the same thing, as though his memories had stopped at the moment they first met. Only later did she learn that he had Alzheimer’s disease, an early-onset form of dementia. So if one day the person you love forgot who you were because of an illness, what would you do?
