The Saltless Empress

She was the only empress personally appointed by Emperor Shenzong of the Ming Dynasty. The history books described her as gentle, virtuous, and possessed of the bearing befitting an empress. She died in attendance in the forty-eighth year of the Wanli era. Five days later, Emperor Shenzong fell ill, and he died that July. At last, husband and wife were reunited. Rumor had it that the home of Captain Wang of the Embroidered Uniform Guard was blessed with a celestial beauty, a lovely young woman so beautiful and delicate that anyone would pity her. But it was also said that the captain had an ugly daughter, plain as could be, broad-shouldered and loud-voiced. Though the elder daughter, Miss Wang, was not as delicate as the second, she had an oval face, willow-shaped brows, almond eyes, and full lips. She had a naturally cheerful, charming smile. People called her ugly, but she didn't mind. She sat quietly in her chambers, reading and writing, perfectly at ease. When the emperor held a selection for his wedding, the second Miss Wang was chosen. Everyone craned their necks to find out what rank she would receive. In the end, she remained in the palace, while the elder Miss Wang returned home to prepare for her own wedding. This story is fictional. Please do not imitate.
