Once upon a time, there was a mountain. On it stood a Taoist temple, where lived a Taoist who knew nothing of the ways of the world. He could neither make pills nor draw talismans, and he couldn’t tell fortunes or read omens. On days when the clouds drifted lazily across the sky, all he did was stare up at it, lost in thought. A young man came searching for the place, claiming he was destined to be connected to the mountain and declaring that he would never leave: “I’m Su Yunqi. Here on this mountaintop, I’ll walk until the stream runs dry, then sit and watch the clouds rise. Tell me, aren’t we very much destined to meet here?” The Taoist could only smile helplessly and say, “Good girl, this young master says he’s destined to meet you.” His female disciple, Ling Yue, raised an eyebrow without hesitation. “The moon is hidden by dark clouds. That’s a bad omen. If they’re destined to meet, it can only be an ill-fated connection.”
