Yun Shan, a tough-as-nails 21st-century courier, transmigrates to an alternate ancient world after a car accident. She is reborn as a young widow whose husband has just died in the army. After her sister-in-law falsely accuses her of seducing her brother-in-law, she dies by smashing her head against a wall. When she opens her eyes, she and her twin children have been thrown out of the family home.
Leading her two scrawny, dark-skinned children, she looks at the ramshackle house halfway up the mountain, where they’ll be living among wild beasts, then at the few acres of barren sandy soil and the piles of rubble around the house.
Yun Shan bursts into tears. “This farming life is starting off in the most damn ridiculous way!”
But even more ridiculous is the useless golden finger she receives: a portable weather forecast System. “Please note, Host: As a friendly tip upon your first binding, a severe drought and flooding disaster lasting three years will begin next spring. Please prepare your reserves of money and grain.”
Yun Shan collapses to the ground. “You’re throwing the ultimate challenge at me right from the start. Are you trying to scare me to death? Or what?”
Yun Shan wants to die, but can’t bring herself to do it, so she can only grit her teeth and figure out how to create the conditions she needs, even when none exist. After all, starving to death is a truly miserable and agonizing way to go...
And so:
She works hard at farming.
She works hard to raise her son and daughter.
She works hard to hide grain in burrows everywhere, like a mouse.
But... why does she keep feeling that her five-year-old prodigy of a stepson is secretly watching her with a look that’s sometimes complicated, sometimes hateful, and sometimes sinister?
Her calculating wolf-cub of a son: In this life, it seems a kind “mouse spirit” has possessed Mother. So who am I supposed to take revenge on for the inhuman suffering and hatred I endured in my previous life?
Her sweet, adorable, food-loving daughter: Mother can make so many yummy things! Mother is the best!
Her ex-husband, hoping to get back together: That stupid woman has managed to make a name for herself with farming. Should I take her as a concubine, or tempt her with the position of legal secondary wife?
The tall, brawny magistrate, a rough man cursed to bring his wives bad luck: “My dear, marry me! I want us to grow old together, just the two of us, for the rest of our lives.”
Yun Shan sneers. “How can you guarantee that?”
The magistrate: “I have a special fate.”
Yun Shan: “?”
“In my 26 years, from birth until now, I’ve brought about the deaths of seven fiancées, ten women who wanted to be my concubines, nine maids who wanted to be my bedchamber attendants, five famous courtesans who wanted to be my mistresses, and four widows who wanted to be my lovers.”
Yun Shan stares at him, dumbfounded. “What?”
Seeing that his future wife is both frightened and suspicious, the magistrate hastily adds, “My dear, I swear you and my mother are exceptions. Any other woman who comes along, I’ll bring about her death. If a whole group comes, I’ll bring about all their deaths. Once we’re married, what woman would dare risk her life trying to steal her man from you?”
“So you’re marrying me because you don’t want to be a bachelor for the rest of your life, and you’re just settling for me as a tool to carry on your family line? Get lost...” Yun Shan slams the door, though her words don’t match what’s in her heart.
The magistrate stands there, utterly bewildered. Sweat breaks out across his forehead as he frantically pounds on the door. “My dear, you’ve got it all wrong! I really do love you~~~”
