Give it a little more time.
Maybe the next second will bring an end to all the pain.
Maybe the heart will open, and the two of them will embrace.
She thought this would be the best place to end up, but she never expected
her marriage to him to be tangled in darkness and confusion.
She not only failed to protect the person she wanted to protect, but dragged herself and him into a living hell.
Should she hate the man who had stayed by her side, or blame the misunderstandings that had accumulated over time and led to unfathomable chaos? In the end, the man who filled her with fear from head to toe was the one she had hurt most deeply.
Where was the road home?
When all the confusion had finally been cleared away,
when she looked back,
would the one she had held in her heart be waiting for her…
Excerpt One
“Did you really not want to have my child that badly?” The pain in Gu Yue’s eyes swallowed her like the dark of night. He pushed her away in fury, opened the door, and left.
Her nails dug into her palm as she instinctively protected her belly. Even if this child could not be allowed to exist, it was still one she had once longed for.
“Mommy, aren’t you going to tell me the truth about Daddy?”
“Xiao Xuan, the truth would only bring more pain right now. Let your father hate me. I don’t want things to get any worse. Leaving is the best way to set things right. Also, Xiao Xuan, you can’t call me Mommy anymore. I’m your aunt.”
“Do you really think my dad will let you leave?” Tears as big as beans rolled down Gu Zixuan’s young face as he clung to Xu Anyan and sobbed.
Excerpt Two
“Xu Anyan, are you satisfied now? Just how deeply do you love Song Chen that you could hurt me so badly without a second thought, leaving me utterly broken? Why? Why can you never trust me? Do I really look so despicable to you?” His eyes were distant and weary. After turning away, he let tears fall from his reddened eyes.
Xu Anyan felt all the strength drain from her body. She screamed inwardly, No, that’s not it. I liked him long ago, from the very first time I saw him. It was love at first sight. But back then, I was so confused by my hazy feelings for Song Chen that I couldn’t tell what I truly felt.
This carefully laid trap wasn’t set by anyone. It was the pain caused by two hearts that had drawn close from the very beginning, but kept evading each other because they were trying so hard to escape and refused to admit the truth.
Excerpt Three
At the hospital
“Xinyue, slow down.” Gu Yunqing jogged after his younger sister.
Gu Xinyue was about to run into a man. She immediately stopped, but her momentum carried her forward and she fell right in front of him.
“Uncle, aren’t you a grown-up? When you see a child fall, aren’t you supposed to help her up?” Gu Yunqing stood beside his sister with his arms folded and made no move to help. If she weren’t so mischievous, they wouldn’t be at the hospital, and she wouldn’t have fallen. Maybe this would teach her a lesson.
Gu Yue shot the twins an impatient glance and strode away without a word.
“Wow, big brother, that uncle is so handsome!”
“If you’re going to swoon over someone, at least use your eyes, silly.”
“Big brother, you’re the silly one.”
“Whatever, idiot.”
“Yunqing, why would you talk to your sister like that?” Xu Anyan came walking over. She had seen what happened and let out a sigh of relief. Fortunately, Gu Yue hadn’t done anything unusual.
“Mom, did you see him? That uncle was so handsome! You said our dad was the most handsome man in the universe. Is he as handsome as that uncle?”
Xu Anyan broke out in a cold sweat. How was she supposed to answer? Should she say that their unbelievably handsome father was just as handsome as the uncle they’d just seen?
