Scene One
"What are you chatting with that Japanese guy about?" He curled his lip. "And he's a guy, too."
"Stop calling him that. China and Japan established friendly relations ages ago." I scorned his childish attitude.
"What is he to you?"
"A classmate." I brushed him off. The truth was, a single word like classmate couldn't describe my relationship with A Yi. Maybe he was interested in me, but to me, he was someone worth knowing.
"Why did you buy my family home?" I didn't want to discuss some imaginary romance with him. "I want to buy it back. Name your price."
"Well, that's because your house was going to be auctioned off two years ago, and I happened to need to buy a place for my mother, so..."
He started dodging the question again.
"The price. Why all this pointless talk?" I sounded rather harsh, because I didn't want anything to do with him. Now I was beginning to regret indulging myself and agreeing to go to his house today.
"Wen Wanqiu, can't you speak to me nicely for once?"
"No." I stepped on the accelerator and pulled the car over. "Keep talking and I'll kick you out."
Scene Two
"Zhan Nuohai, I'm here." I pushed open the door to his hospital room and called out.
The hospital bed was piled high with all kinds of fruit and nutritional supplements.
"Are you some nouveau riche? Why'd you buy so much?" I looked through the things. "I want an apple."
"Wash one and eat it." He sat on the bed, watching me. "Wash it, and I'll peel it for you."
"Hehe, you know I can't peel apples." I carried a few apples toward the bathroom in the adjoining room. "You're such a good guy, big brother."
"The brothers from the headquarters of the Rixin Society bought all this." I handed Nuohai the apples and a knife, then sat beside him and watched.
"You should learn too. You still can't even peel an apple after eight years." He looked at me and smiled helplessly.
"It's not as if I have to know how to do everything. I graduated from a top university and run a top company. A perfect woman like me doesn't need to peel apples." I stuck out my tongue at him. "Housework isn't for me."
"That's not even housework. It's just a basic necessity."
"Honestly, you talk too much." I sat to his left so he couldn't see the left side of my face, and began reviewing the documents I'd brought.
"If someone came in and saw us now, they'd probably be shocked. I'm the patient, but I'm the one peeling apples for you." He placed the peeled apple in my hand.
"You could peel one for yourself too." I took a bite without looking at him.
"It's delicious. Big brother, you're even great at peeling apples," I said provocatively. I've always found it amusing to call him big brother.
