The story of the White Snake and the Green Snake has been widely told in China since ancient times. The love story of Lady White Snake and Xu Xian is known to every household and has spread throughout the land.
After experiencing the tenderness of meeting Xu Xian at the Broken Bridge, the bravery of flooding the Golden Mountain Temple, and the agony of being imprisoned in Leifeng Pagoda, where would the devoted Lady White Snake go? Where would her spirit find its home? This book’s story begins there.
Back then, Lady White Snake was trapped beneath a golden alms bowl by Fahai and stood on the brink of death. But to protect Xu Xian and their son, Xu Shilin, she gave her life to push the bowl away, letting the Green Snake flee with father and son.
After settling Xu Xian and his son somewhere safe, the Green Snake went to Mount Huangya in the northern frontier to avenge her sister. There she met the Immortal Chimei and followed him in arduous cultivation, eventually attaining an indestructible body. On her way back to Hangzhou, she found Lady White Snake and Xu Xian’s son, Xu Shilin. The Green Snake personally taught him martial arts, and later he passed the military examination with top honors.
After Xu Shilin became the top military graduate, the Green Snake told him about his origins and helped him split open Leifeng Pagoda to free Lady White Snake. The two sisters saw through the vanity of the world and went to Mount Huangya, where they had been born, to live in seclusion and cultivate, hoping to attain immortality. During this time, the Green Snake met Ahan, a commander of the Great Wall, and fell in love at first sight. They were drawn to each other and fell deeply in love, beginning a passionate romance. But a white fox interfered in their relationship, sowing discord. This sparked a struggle, both open and hidden, between the White Snake, the Green Snake, and the white fox.
Later, the white fox took the Green Snake’s appearance and shared a bed with Ahan, becoming pregnant. Torn between her rival and her beloved, the Green Snake was heartbroken, unable to stay or leave. Just then, the white fox’s life was in danger as she struggled to give birth. The White Snake and Green Snake put aside their grievances and saved the fox and her baby. The white fox came to her senses. But Heaven learned what the White Snake had done and sent its heavenly soldiers and generals to capture the sisters. The Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King pinned the White Snake and Green Snake beneath his crown, but the Green Snake was saved when the White Snake shoved her out from under it.
After escaping, the Green Snake immediately went to find her master, the Immortal Chimei. Together with the Green Snake and the white fox, he rescued the White Snake. From then on, they withdrew into the mountains to cultivate and ultimately attained enlightenment.
To this day, White Snake Valley and Green Snake Ravine can still be found at Mount Huangya in the northern frontier. The cave where the White Snake cultivated in White Snake Valley remains, as does the Green Snake Cave in Green Snake Ravine. They have become remarkable natural attractions, and the story described in this book can be found there.
After reading the introduction, I didn't want to read it.
