I used to think that love ended at the altar. That loving someone had nothing to do with their background or appearance, as long as you gave them your whole heart. But all my devotion earned was his contemptuous laugh: “She’s not like you. She’s a lady from a distinguished family. Can all your hard work make up for her family background?” After being humiliated, I resolved to forget him. So why did I give in when he called for help? This time, I ruined my own reputation for him, only to hear him say, “Who told her to let me use her?” In the end, they tried to silence me for good, framing me and sending me to prison. Heaven finally took pity on me, and I escaped. Taking off my ugly, oversized glasses, I remembered that I was a lady from a distinguished family myself. I would choose the most promising husband from among all the sons of high-ranking officials. As for the people who hurt me, I’ll tear them apart. I won’t spare a single one! The first time he met me was on a plane. He never imagined then that our fates would be bound together for life. So on our wedding night, he told me, “I can give you status and wealth. Love, I have none to offer.” I replied, “Romance between men and women is too fleeting. Status and wealth matter more. I’ll take as much as you can give. As for love, I reserve that for my family.” When the so-called “other woman” came knocking, I smiled calmly. “If you want child support or an abortion fee, go ask the man. And if you want a divorce, you’ve come to the wrong person. It’s not that I won’t divorce him; he’ll never divorce me. He can have as many women on the side as he likes, but I’m the only one who’s his wife. You were just foolish enough to become his mistress.” She didn’t believe me and went to confront him. He glared at her. “You’re carrying my child? If the paternity test says it isn’t mine, would you be willing to go to prison?” A devoted-love story.
