Excerpt One: After a woman gave birth, she asked, “Jiana, where’s the master?” Jiana, the one who had been called upon, trembled all over. “Princess Consort, the prince... he... he hasn’t come back...” “What?! So that’s how it is. He’s so busy with his fourth brother’s affairs that he abandoned me and our son, and didn’t even have time to see his own child?” The woman’s lips curved in a sad smile as she spoke bitterly. “Princess Consort, the prince is just very busy!” Jiya couldn’t bear to see her mistress upset and spoke up. “I know. All right, you may leave.” The woman’s tone suddenly turned flat. “Yes... This servant takes her leave!” The two maids curtsied, flicking their handkerchiefs, then withdrew. An hour later, the woman, who had just given birth, took her son and ran away from home. A month later, a certain prince returned to the manor happily, carrying gifts. The servants were waiting to greet him at the gate, but one little woman was missing. He wondered about it: Hadn’t her month of confinement ended? The prince returned to the main residence, puzzled, and finally realized something was wrong. He summoned Yimu, who had been sneaking around. “Tell me, where did the Princess Consort go?” “On the day she gave birth, the Princess Consort got angry because you didn’t come back and left home. We servants have been looking for her for a month, but haven’t found her!” Yimu’s voice grew quieter as he spoke, and he edged farther away from the prince. The prince’s face was beyond livid, and Yimu feared the furious man would kill him with a single slap. “Damn that woman! She just gave birth and ran away from home. When I catch you, you’ll be sorry!” With that, the prince, who had only just returned to the manor, mounted his horse and rode away again, destination unknown.
