The realm had only just been unified, and the Five-Stone Powder was rampant.

Outraged, the emperor established the “Arresting Bureau” and the “Rehabilitation House.”

The Arresting Bureau was made up of the finest members of the Censorate and tasked with fighting drug trafficking. The Rehabilitation House was staffed by eunuchs who had received rigorous training and were responsible for treating addiction. Both reported directly to the emperor.

**

He was the head of the Arresting Bureau. “He” was the head of the Rehabilitation House.

He hated eunuchs, and “he” despised censors.

He was shrewd and capable of anything, feared even by the emperor. “He” was ruthless and cold-hearted, and people called him a devil behind his back.

The two of them were assigned to work together, sending the whole realm into an uproar.

No one knew that each of them had a secret mission of their own.

They fought openly and were at each other’s throats.

After an accident, he was imprisoned for his crime. “He” knelt in the snow for seven days and seven nights, then secured the emperor’s pardon through a bargain.

When a sudden upheaval put “him” in danger, he went alone and unleashed a massacre like a demon from hell, all to keep “him” alive.

But as their missions neared completion and the truth was about to emerge, everyone suddenly seemed unlike the people they had known. Only then did “he” realize: “He” had clearly laid a trap. So how had he ended up caught in someone else’s?

It turned out everything had been wrong from the start.

In the end, “he” drove him to the brink, and he drove his sword straight through “him.”

**Excerpt**

Atop the snowy mountain, “he” stood immaculate in white.

He came gliding through the wind, his clothes and hair fluttering.

Looking at the red stain slowly spreading across the hem behind “him,” he smiled handsomely. “I never thought you’d tell me you were a woman this way.”

He shook out the fox-fur cloak and gently draped it over “him.” His voice was warm and magnetic. “A young lady shouldn’t let her period show like that. Aren’t you embarrassed? Actually... I knew you were a woman long ago.”

“What makes you think that’s my period?”

He shuddered. “He” turned back with a faint smile, his voice turning cold.

“That is your child!”

Ye Li had always believed there was no addiction you couldn’t quit, only a resolve you couldn’t summon.

Later, she learned that there was one kind of addiction that sank into the bones and corroded the soul, one that even death could not cure.

A novel by Su Zi. No tragedy: the journey is tortuous, but the ending is happy.
