The main image characters in the poem are the grandfather and five women, that is, the five "grandmothers" in the first person of the poem, the five wives and concubines of the manor owner, and their descendants. The narrative of the entire poem revolves around this old-style manor and the lives and experiences of the characters set in the poem.
