"A Madman's Notes" is a work with rich meaning and certain ideological depth. What it shows us is the ups and downs of coal worker Shao Shixi and his son Shao Shixi's life experiences and experiences during a historical period from the eve of the liberation of New China, through the "anti-rightist" and the Cultural Revolution after the founding of New China, to the new era. The tragic fate shows the various ways of life of ordinary people in a historical situation full of paradoxes: they either conform to the paradoxical society with simple philosophies of life such as "concealing and deceiving," forbearance, and flattery, or they do the opposite.

Taking the two clues of Liu Guanghua's current marriage and love story of three generations of his family and his "life" in the underworld after his death, the old couple in real life quarrel throughout their lives, with the mother winning the majority. Each of the five children's marriages has its own characteristics. Some make do, some are consensual, and some fall in love before and then get a chance to be together, but the results are also varied. The third generation is the standard for choosing a spouse for the younger generation; Liu Guanghua in the underworld is better able to express some of his true thoughts. It is an interesting marriage and love novel worth reading.
