The protagonist, Mr. Wayne, has lived in an old house for generations and owns a library. One day, Wayne discovered a strange creature looking for an exit in the library. Wayne followed the bird-like Mr. Raven (Mr. Crow) and came to another world through a magic mirror. Wayne was shocked by this world: there were skeletal ghosts dancing and fighting; there were forests where stupid giants and ignorant "dwarfs" lived; and there were hazy swamps where female leopards were looking for babies and charming women were waiting to be discovered... And the "evil" of this world was concentrated in the city of Brica: Lilith, the princess of Brica who was controlled by and associated with the "shadow". (Lilith first appeared in Sumerian mythology. In Jewish rabbinic literature, she is referred to as the first wife of Adam, the human ancestor in the Old Testament. She was created by God from clay and left the Garden of Eden because she was dissatisfied with God). The mysterious events unfold layer by layer, and MacDonald shows and explores us: the story between Adam and Eve, the fall and redemption of mankind, until finally moving towards God, towards the light, and the fragility of human nature. There are many symbolic symbols used in it, which are reminiscent of Virgil's works and Dante's "Divine Comedy". "Lilith" was first published in 1895. It is the last fantasy novel written by George Macdonald, the "King of Victorian Fairy Tales" in his later years. It focuses on the nature of life, death and redemption. It is considered to be Macdonald's most mysterious and profound work.
