"Meiji Restoration" is the seventh volume of "History of Iwanami Japan". In the second half of the nineteenth century, how was the founding of Japan positioned in the overall trend of world history? Under what historical background and political theory did the shogunate, which had sustained two and a half centuries, have to collapse. On this basis, we further examine the relationship between the Meiji government established after the fall of the shogunate and the people, as well as the life of ordinary people during the Bakumatsu Restoration. In addition, looking at the developed countries around the world and exploring Japan's modern national model, how did the leaders of the Restoration respond to the growing freedom and civil rights movement after returning home? What is the ultimate demand of this civil rights movement? What is the meaning of the Meiji constitutional system, which is called the end point of the Meiji Restoration? These are all questions this book attempts to explore.
