The Meiji Restoration (volume 7 of Iwanami's History of Japan)
About This Novel
"Meiji Restoration" is the seventh volume of "History of Iwanami Japan". In the second half of the nineteenth century, how was the founding of Japan positioned in the overall trend of world history? Under what historical background and political theory did the shogunate, which had sustained two and a half centuries, have to collapse. On this basis, we further examine the relationship between the Meiji government established after the fall of the shogunate and the people, as well as the life of ordinary people during the Bakumatsu Restoration. In addition, looking at the developed countries around the world and exploring Japan's modern national model, how did the leaders of the Restoration respond to the growing freedom and civil rights movement after returning home? What is the ultimate demand of this civil rights movement? What is the meaning of the Meiji constitutional system, which is called the end point of the Meiji Restoration? These are all questions this book attempts to explore.

If Cixi had supported Guangxu instead of controlling him, and if the Qing government had fought a duel instead of negotiating peace after the defeat of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895, the Meiji Restoration would not have been able to ascend to the throne. Without the compensation for the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895, there would have been no war of aggression against China in 1937...
The Meiji Restoration was the beginning of modern Japan. It was an epoch-making reform in Japan's modern history and had a profound impact on the development of Japan, its neighboring countries and even the world.
Mr. Akira Tanaka plays a pivotal role in the field of modern Japanese history, especially the study of the Meiji Restoration. He had great recognition of the Meiji Restoration, which is indeed of far-reaching significance.
Citing first-hand historical materials, it outlines the whole story from the arrival of the "black ships" to the formation of Japan's constitutional system, supplemented by rich illustrations to show the various life styles and leisure anecdotes of the common people during the Meiji period.
