On the first day of school, I woke up before dawn.
There was that blue coat that had been washed white by the pillow. Last night my mother said, "Buy a new one." I said no, this one is comfortable.
Actually, it's not comfort, it's habit. I have worn this coat since the second day of junior high school, and the cuffs are frayed and the collar is frayed from washing. But during those years in town, I relied on it in winter. I have worn it for three years and have feelings for it.
My mother got up early and made breakfast, fried an egg, heated a glass of milk, and put it on the table.
When I sat down to eat, she sat across from me and looked at me without saying a word. I looked up and asked, "You don't want to eat?" She smiled and said, "I'll just watch you eat." I lowered my head and continued eating, not letting her see that my eyes were a little hot.
Mingcheng No. 1 Middle School is much bigger than I imagined. The school gate is made of iron, with the school name embedded in gold, which reflects in the sun.
I stood at the door for a few seconds, holding the admission notice in my hand, and my palms were all sweaty.
There are many people at the school gate, people carrying schoolbags, riding bicycles, and walking in twos and threes. Everyone looks calm, as if this is their place. I took a deep breath and stepped inside.
The head teacher is a female teacher in her thirties, surnamed Chen, with a low ponytail. She speaks quickly but clearly.
She led me through the corridor. There were classrooms on both sides of the corridor. The window glass was cleaned brightly, and students sitting neatly inside could be seen from the outside. Someone looked up out of the window and their eyes fell on me. I subconsciously lowered my head and stared at the toes of my shoes.
The head teacher pushed open the door of Class 2 and 3, and the buzz of voices inside fell silent for a moment.
I stood on the podium, my palms sweating even more. Teacher Chen asked me to introduce myself. I opened my mouth and said in a low voice, "Hello everyone, my name is Shen Li." After saying that, I didn't know what to say next. Teacher Chen added for me: "Shen Li is transferred from the town and his grades are very good. Please take good care of him."
There were people applauding under the podium, sparsely, and most of them were looking at me.
I lowered my head and walked to the last row by the window and sat down. I put my schoolbag on my lap and stared at the small scratch on the table in a daze.
My deskmate is a girl with a high ponytail and two dimples when she smiles. She turned her head and whispered, "Hello, my name is Lin Wei." I smiled at her and whispered, "Hello." She looked at me for a few seconds and said, "You look pretty when you smile. Smile more in the future." I was stunned for a moment and didn't answer. She didn't care and went back to flipping through the book.
When the last class in the morning was about to end, the head teacher came in again, followed by a boy.
Teacher Chen said: "Let me introduce you to the newly transferred classmates. Everyone is welcome." Then he gave a name——
"Xie Yan."
I was lowering my head to take notes, but when I heard these two words, my pen paused.
Not because of his name, but because when the head teacher spoke, the whole class was quiet for a moment, and then there was a small buzz of discussion.
That kind of reaction is not like that of an ordinary transfer student - it seems that everyone knows
