Shuichi Akai used to be a diligent cleanup agent in the Conan-logic world, responsible for ensuring that every Conan-logic world could continue to exist in a plausible and coherent way, snuffing out errors that violated the laws of the world before they could take root.
It sounds impressive, but most of Shuichi Akai's work involved keeping an eye on hundreds of surveillance feeds at all times: Gin starts getting suspicious of the protagonist? Adjust the numbers. The protagonist leaves behind a piece of evidence? Find a chance to destroy it. The venue they need next month gets sealed off? Use his clearance to open it back up...
Yes, it was all backstage busywork. And as a member of the world, he even had to play out the plot. That also explains why the word "used to" is so apt. Just think about it: when has Shuichi Akai ever been the kind of person to work diligently?
Shuichi Akai might become a workaholic, but the odds of him actually turning into one are slim.
Anyway, after doing the job a few times, Shuichi Akai figured it out. As long as the world kept running without any major issues, there was no need to sweat the little things.
Once he relaxed, Akai shifted fully into observer mode and gradually came to a few conclusions:
Worlds with forums and livestreams are the biggest hassle, because he has to dodge even more eyes. If he draws the audience's attention in the comments, they dock his pay.
Worlds with cheat-power secret identities are also a pain. He has to rack his brain to make them seem plausible. Who do you think arranged all the ID documents for those secret identities?
Worlds with supernatural powers or crossovers with other stories are the most relaxing. There's barely anything to clean up, so he can treat them like a vacation, and the main plot usually has nothing to do with him.
And then there's Shuichi Akai's favorite kind: stories where a local from a Conan-logic world is the protagonist. The world usually finds a way to make traces of things seem plausible on its own, so all he has to do is check up on them.
Like the one he's dealing with now.
Shuichi Akai looked at the world control panel: [Protagonist: Kenji Hagiwara]. Even the high-risk tag "Black Hagi, Red Matsuda" beside it couldn't wipe the smile off his face.
He was ready to take a proper vacation, never expecting this to become the biggest setback of his cleanup career.
World One: Black Hagi, Red Matsuda
"Matsu..."
"Hagi..."
Shuichi Akai: (smokes)
World Two: Triple Agent Red and Gin
"When are we going to close the net? If I keep this up, I'll become the organization's second-in-command."
Shuichi Akai: Impressive.
World Three: Summoned to Other Worlds as a Secret Identity
"Wait, aren't secret identities from other worlds usually the ones who come to ours?"
"We're going to fight Bungo Stray Dogs? Seriously?"
Shuichi Akai: Now that's worth sitting up for.
Akai has no romance pairing. The only secondary couple is Hagiwara and Matsuda (they don't appear in every world); all other relationships are platonic.
Later on, I'll bring a few worlds' Rei and Kei into the story so they can suffer along with everyone else.
