“Have you ever seen a boy like the sun, so dazzling it hurts to look?”
I first met Wumu in Huhu Alley in 2018. That summer, the people playing mahjong came in groups of four or five, and so did the people getting into fights. I was pulling hair with my Third Aunt, each of us trying to outmuscle the other, when the boy showed up at just the right moment.
“Let go! Who are you? I’m calling the police!”
Faced with the boy’s earnest enthusiasm, I only coldly tossed out, “Stay away from me,” and stepped aside.
When I saw him again, he was my desk mate in the new school year, his bright eyes following me as he tried to be my friend.
Classmate, can I sit here?
You won’t regret being friends with me, Chen.
Hey, wait for me. Don’t be mad, okay?
Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! Have you had any mooncakes?
It’s raining. Are you home?
Happy birthday, Chen.
Surprise.
Staying safe isn’t enough. I want you to be happy, too.
It’s okay, Chen. This will all pass.
I’m Wumu. I won’t leave you. Wumu will never leave Chen Mian.
…
Our first meeting was awkward, a moment of hiding beneath a cloudy sky. Before that, my life had stretched on in darkness, damp and lingering like a drizzle.
He came closer, one step at a time, until at last I found the courage to look up again.
In the last days of summer, cicadas sang out long, ringing notes. The faint scent of camellias drifted through the damp rainy season, and I found a sun willing to fall for me.

“What would you say if you met someone again after a long separation?”
“Hello, Jiang Ye.” That’s what Jiang Ye hears from Jiang Ye when they meet again. They’re like parallel lines that never intersect, always running into each other wherever they go, yet never having anything to do with each other.
She had a crush on him for three years and spent another three avoiding him. She thought it would all end in that nameless autumn, with the long-planned farewell.
But Jiang Ye’s illness and an accident involving a friend happen at the same time, and Jiang Ye can no longer avoid him. She returns to his side, once again the shy girl who secretly watches him.
A million-yuan healing contract brings her back to Nancheng, which she fled seven years ago.
She never imagined that the patient she was assigned to treat would be Jiang Ye, the man she’d had a crush on for seven years.
Seven years ago, he was adored by everyone while she looked up at him from afar.
Seven years later, after years of being tormented by insomnia, he becomes her client.

Meeting Jiang Ye feels like fate…
At a friend’s insistence, Jiang Ye goes to an appointment with a psychological counselor.
The moment he sees Jiang Ye, an inexplicable ache wells up in his chest.
As the model child his parents always held up as an example, Jiang Ye was a constant presence throughout his childhood. Her well-behaved, sensible image shaped his entire childhood.
Her presence was like a mirror, exposing every bit of Jiang Ye’s disheveled self. For a time, he wanted to run away, yet he couldn’t help being drawn to her and gradually moving closer.
The day Jiang Ye realizes she still likes him, he wants to say, “Let’s make up, Jiang Ye. Even if it hurts, let’s be together.”
Through the endless night, she is his only cure.
