The White Moonlight of the World-Destroying Demon Lord Has Returned

[Sorry, the original worldbuilding was too complicated, so I've scrapped and rewritten all the chapters I had ready. I'm temporarily putting this one aside to start another novel. I'll come back to this one once it's ready. I don't want to rush it and let everyone down!]

Yuan Ciyue is socially anxious and slow to react. The Heavenly Dao unexpectedly chooses her to win over the Demon Lord bent on destroying the world, before he can bring about its destruction.

They say the Demon Lord is as beautiful as fine jade, unmatched in looks, but cruel and merciless, a madman who has killed countless people.

She looks at herself, someone who gets hurt easily even from a single blow, and timidly asks, “M-me?”

The Heavenly Dao: Mm-hmm!

Yuan Ciyue: All right, then. ╯^╰

She silently clutches her little bamboo basket, gives up on the mission without hesitation, and runs away.

On the run, she rescues a handsome, injured young man. He is covered in blood and looks as though he doesn't have long to live. Her heart softens, and she reaches out to him.

To fool the Heavenly Dao, they reach an agreement: she will take him in while he recovers, and he will pretend to be her husband to help her through her troubles.

The young man is exceptionally skilled and gentle by nature. He not only protects her, but also thoughtfully takes care of her daily needs.

In winter, he warms her bed. In summer, he fans her cool.

As time goes by, Yuan Ciyue starts to think that living this way wouldn't be so bad.

The young man brings up marriage, shyly and obliquely. Looking at his sincere, ardent gaze, she agrees.

On their wedding day, a notification she hasn't heard in a long time suddenly sounds:

[Congratulations! You have successfully completed the mission to win over the Demon Lord!]

Yuan Ciyue's smile stiffens. “Where's the Demon Lord?”

The Heavenly Dao: Right in front of you.

Yuan Ciyue looks confused.

How could such a gentle, considerate husband be the brutal, tyrannical Demon Lord bent on destroying the world?

He's clearly... so good to her.

Chi Yanzhou had long planned how to stay by Yuan Ciyue's side without raising suspicion.

When he was at his most wretched, Yuan Ciyue appeared and rescued him from a sunless mire, then suddenly vanished, mercilessly trampling on the heart he'd offered her.

After she disappeared, he searched all three realms like a madman, but could never find her again.

Given another chance at life,

he knows how softhearted she is, so he deliberately makes himself look badly wounded and appears before her.

As expected, she saves him.

Even if it means shattering the laws of the Heavenly Dao, he will defy cause and effect to find her and keep her by his side.

Yuan Ciyue is forced to leave the mortal world. The day the Heavenly Dao takes her away, the only path back is closed.

The land around them is filled with wailing and bloodshed.

Yuan Ciyue watches Chi Yanzhou close in on her, tense with fear.

So... he really is a demon.

Just as she thinks she's about to die, Chi Yanzhou strides across a mountain of corpses, destroys the System still issuing commands, then bends down and kisses her forehead. His voice is low and possessive: “Yuan Ciyue, can you see this mission through to the end this time?”
