The man plays Ye Ben, and the woman plays Si Fan.

But she is the one who plays Ye Ben, and he is the one who plays Si Fan.

A retro romance set in the 1980s between a female Peking opera warrior and the son of a Hong Kong tycoon.

Please read the following notes before reading the story!

1. The thoughts of all characters in this story do not represent the author's own views, especially Alexander's.

2. The author is opposed to the negative views of mainland China held by characters from Hong Kong in the first half of the story. Alexander and his family identify as Chinese by both nationality and ethnicity. Because of the times and their personal limitations, they think their homeland is relatively backward, but that does not mean they reject their identity as Chinese.

3. The heroine, Chen Dan, is pansexual. The other protagonist, Alexander, is queer. He is biologically male, but his inner gender identity is not male. The story still uses "he" as his pronoun because he cannot let go of his social status and public persona, so he continues to present himself as a man in public.

4. The other protagonist, Alexander, is not attracted to men. His sexual orientation is Chen Dan: he loves only Chen Dan, and she is the only one he will ever love.

5. This is an older-woman-younger-man romance. Chen Dan is about five or six years older than Alexander, and she is thirty.

6. Some details about Chinese opera may be inaccurate. I'll make corrections if readers point them out.

7. I firmly support the one country, two systems policy and the reunification of the motherland.
