Mischievous, silly, and adorably clueless [tenant farmer] x a teaching, "motherly" yet scheming [landlord]
Blurb:
Yao Xiaodai's parents died when she was little, leaving her to beg for food everywhere with a runny nose.
An old landlord took pity on her and thought she was pretty, so he brought her into his household to raise as a child bride for his daughter.
But as time went on, she began to notice something was wrong...
"Mom, stop hitting me! I won't throw Third Aunt's underwear into the river again."
"Mom, stop hitting me! I won't replace the Bodhisattva statue with a cat again."
"Mom, stop hitting me! I won't fight Dahuang for his bed again."
When others corrected her and said, "That's your future wife," Yao Xiaodai would vanish in a flash and say, "How can Mom be my wife?"
Then one day, someone congratulated her. "Xiaodai, you're going to have two moms now."
Xiaodai's eyes widened. She clung to Dami's leg, tears welling in her eyes. "Mom, wasn't I your child bride?"
Bonus scene:
Xiaodai fell flat on her face while stealing bird eggs. Dami promptly snapped off a bamboo switch and chased her around the village.
That night, Xiaodai served Dami, wiping away tears as she went. Annoyed, Dami grabbed the switch and warned her, "If you don't do a good job, you'll get a taste of bamboo-shoot stir-fry with pork again."
Xiaodai held back her tears, too angry to speak up. When her hands finally grew too sore, she timidly asked, "When will it be my turn...?"
