The first time Dan Feng met Zhong Quan was at the Dragon Masters' residence.
Dan Feng was met with a scene of utter devastation.
The Dragon Masters lay sprawled everywhere, in the garden and inside the house, all of them convulsing.
"Hey, are you the current Dragon Lord?"
The figure seated in the middle of the courtyard slowly turned around.
Scales covered half the boy's face, and his dragon tail curled loosely around his ankle.
He wore nothing but a loose robe.
"You're quite young."
The boy ambled over, ignoring Dan Feng's expression as he lifted his chin. "Come on, let your ancestor have a look and make sure you haven't grown crooked."
Dan Feng slapped his hand away on the spot.
The second time Dan Feng saw Zhong Quan was on his way to buy some pastries.
He had only just taken power and was swamped with work every day, so he could only go out for a walk now and then.
The boy wore a mask as he squeezed past him. His sleeve hid the sinister markings on the inside of his wrist, but Dan Feng recognized him anyway.
"Coming through."
They brushed past each other.
The third time was late at night.
By then, he had grown into a mature man, but still had to work until the dead of night every day.
A faint sound came from the roof, like a cat scampering across the eaves.
The still-young Dragon Lord seemed to sense something and looked out the window.
The boy perched on the eaves waved the oiled-paper package in his hand. The gold ornament by his ear flashed in the light.
"It's still hot. Want some?"
