At first, Pei Qingji looked down on Xie Changning.

Xie Changning was violent and domineering, willful and reckless, and always took what he wanted. Backed by overwhelming power, he was someone no one dared to provoke.

With a healer’s compassion, Pei Qingji saved the little demon when he fell ill.

He never expected Xie Changning to say one word and make him his study companion.

Pei Qingji was full of resentment. But Xie Changning was obedient and well-behaved around him, and was even willing to pretend they were ordinary brothers, calling him “Big Brother” at every turn.

Pei Qingji forgot that this was a little menace, and focused single-mindedly on correcting his nature.

Later, when the emperor fell gravely ill, Xie Changning fought for the throne with ruthless resolve, leaving rivers of blood in his wake.

Xie Changning held out his pale, delicate palm and said it was stained with blood. He told Pei Qingji to leave.

Pei Qingji refused. He would do whatever it took to pull Xie Changning into his arms.

Xie Changning lowered his eyes and smiled softly.

Pei Qingji was the legitimate son of the Minister of War’s first wife. He had been sent to live in the countryside at a young age, and was not brought to the capital to study at the Imperial College until he was sixteen.

Xie Changning had assumed he was yet another sinister, craven, vulgar, ignorant little man. He never expected Pei Qingji to be kindhearted, sincere, and truly good.

Someone this good ought to be his.

Without power, he could never claim Pei Qingji. Without the throne, he would be coveted by others.

Xie Changning’s face was expressionless. Whatever he desired, he would have.

A note: This is a beginner’s practice piece, written on a whim. Whether it’s short or long depends on how it feels as I write, owo.
