In the 1980s, when many girls married young, Jiang Xi stayed in school all the way through university and was about to graduate. But a few years earlier, universities had stopped assigning jobs to graduates.
University graduates weren't as valuable anymore, but with a little effort, it was still possible to find a good, secure job.
Jiang Xi didn't care much either way. Just as she was considering whether to stay at the university or look for a job elsewhere, she suddenly learned that her ancestors had been wealthy and had donated their entire fortune in the 1950s.
Now, thirty years later, many details were impossible to sort out because so much time had passed, but quite a lot of the property had been returned.
A pretty Western-style villa, shops in prime locations, and vast tracts of land in Pudong, desolate but plentiful...
Jiang Xi immediately went home, where her family was already sitting together, discussing what to do with the property.
"Dear, your brother will be supporting us in our old age, so the villa and those few shops will go to him."
Jiang's father spoke with some reluctance. "In the old days, daughters were given land as part of their dowry. We won't divide the land in Pudong with your eldest brother. We'll give it to you when you get married."
Nobody farmed anymore, and Pudong was remote and practically worthless. The land wouldn't be much use even now that it had been returned. They might as well give it to her to make her feel better.
Jiang Xi smiled. "Then give it to me now."
It's only yours once it's in your hands.
