Yu Nian had recently felt that something was wrong.
Every night, she felt something like scales brush against her legs and creep up to her waist.
But when she woke, there was nothing unusual.
Yu Nian thought it was an illusion caused by too much stress.
Then one day, she woke to find red marks wrapped around her body from her calves to her waist.
Terrified of snakes, Yu Nian nearly fainted. She moved out in the middle of the night, but it did no good.
To save her own life, Yu Nian sought out a master to exorcise the thing.
But it refused to let up, still clinging tightly to her.
That night, Yu Nian saw the unknown creature's true form for the first time.
In her dream, black scales like obsidian coiled tightly around her legs, while a snake's tail roamed freely over her body, sending tremors through her.
A half-woman, half-snake pressed herself tightly against Yu Nian, leaving no space between them.
Cold fingers covered her eyes.
The creature's delicate kisses trailed from her shoulder to her ear, brushing against her earlobe.
The snake woman's voice was low and forlorn. "You're going to leave me again, aren't you?"
"But Niannian..." Yu Nian felt the snake's tail restlessly sliding against her. She hugged herself tightly. "This time, you won't get another chance..."
As a child, Yu Nian played an old pixel-art game, then eventually forgot all about it.
And so it came looking for her.
