Synopsis
Yue Bai, daughter of the Chancellor of Tianyang, was supposed to marry the great general Bai Youlian. But on her wedding day, she was abducted by Shang He, the “Black Demon King” of Qiuyue. This sudden upheaval exposes the hidden currents roiling between the two nations and pulls her into a vortex of fate.
The moonstone around her neck is a keepsake left by her elder sister, yet it seems to possess a magical power that lets her travel through the cracks in time. She sees Shang He as a young man, the loneliness hidden in his blue eyes resembling the moonstone's glow; meets her sister before her marriage and glimpses the love that was sealed away; and experiences the war between the two nations firsthand, witnessing choices and sacrifices amid the bloodshed.
Shang He's obsession, Bai Youlian's schemes, and the secrets of the King of Qiuyue intertwine to form an invisible web. Yue Bai searches for the truth through cycles of reincarnation. Are the forgotten past and repeated separations shackles of destiny, or the key to breaking the deadlock? When the moon is full again, can she escape her fate and journey into the future with the one she loves?
Theme: Moonlit Portents uses moonstone as a medium for traveling through time and space. Through Yue Bai's entangled fate amid the wars between Tianyang and Qiuyue and across multiple lifetimes, it explores several profound themes: Reflections on fate and resistance: Yue Bai experiences separation and reunion repeatedly through cycles of time. Faced with the prophecy, “A beautiful stone in the moon stirs desire, bringing sorrow through many twists and turns,” she does not submit completely. She gradually awakens through her lives, trying to break the shackles of fate through her own choices and demonstrating an individual's determination to hold on to free will within a predetermined course. The conflict between war and human nature: Set against the wars between the two nations, the story reveals how war devastates individual lives through events such as Shang He being willing to take his own life to protect Yue Bai and Bai Youlian becoming entangled in power struggles because of love and resentment. It portrays the complex clash between love and hate, protection and possession under extreme circumstances, conveying an unspoken yearning for peace. The enduring power of memory and emotion: The moonstone connects fragments of memories across time and space. As Yue Bai and Shang He repeatedly find each other after forgetting and reuniting, they reaffirm their bond. Even when memories are erased, instinctive emotion still guides them toward one another, emphasizing the eternal power of sincere feelings to transcend time and the limits of understanding.
