Li Qingqing transmigrated into a book, landing in a supernatural novel as a white fox spirit.
But the character she'd transmigrated into wasn't a protagonist or even a supporting character, just a bit player in one of the novel's episodic stories. In the original, the white fox spirit was a perfect cannon-fodder character, whose main job was to show off the protagonist group's combat prowess before dying to a single sword strike from the demon-slaying heroes.
Li Qingqing vaguely recalled the original text. The author had wrapped up the white fox spirit's fate in a single sentence: "A flash of white light followed the sweep of the sword. Looking again, they saw only a white fox, stone dead."
Li Qingqing fell silent for a second.
Seriously? She was a demon, at least. Couldn't she last a few rounds? They killed her in one move?
Li Qingqing decided this wouldn't do.
She calculated that the protagonist group wouldn't reach her mountain for another five years. Five years was far too short a time to cultivate into a great demon and keep herself safe. But without formidable strength, all she could do was wait helplessly to become cannon fodder again.
Li Qingqing thought it over, then thought it over some more, and decided to find a great demon in an earlier episodic story, one who had survived the protagonist group's visit, and cozy up to them.
They were all demons, after all. Maybe the great demon would help her improve her cultivation out of solidarity. And if nothing else, when the protagonist group came knocking, she could flee alongside them.
Li Qingqing headed straight for the mountain belonging to the great demon from the previous story.
That day, Li Qingqing obediently sidled up beside the great demon and called out sweetly, "Your Majesty." Then she tried to sound him out. "Your Majesty, is there... some way to improve one's cultivation quickly?"
The Demon King, whose appearance was like that of an immortal descended from the heavens, looked down at the beautiful little fox who had come to seek refuge at his side. His eyes were as deep as ink, his expression unreadable. "There is."
