Happy New Year! Wishing everyone happiness and good fortune!
Li Ji of Sifang Street is the envy of everyone, a man blessed with good fortune.
His tailoring skills support the town's biggest shop. He has apprentices and laborers at his beck and call, and close friends to share tea and conversation with. Best of all, he married Hong Yu, the woman he caught a glimpse of in the capital when he was seventeen.
The neighbors all say he got the better end of the bargain. How could a young woman from the capital be content to stay cooped up in a little tailor shop?
Li Ji thinks so too. Hong Yu has a secret. She doesn't tell him, so he pretends not to know.
Fortunately, after they marry, Hong Yu is gentle and considerate toward him, putting away her fiery temper. Those hands that once wielded blades learn to prepare delicious meals. When they occasionally quarrel, a little soothing is enough to make up. Gradually, the smile she once showed someone else begins to appear when she looks at him, too.
He believes she never had feelings for him. After all, she experienced the splendor of the capital and survived bloody storms, while he was merely the safest place she chose to rest. Still, a quiet, ordinary life together would be more than enough.
Until one night, he is jolted awake by a commotion outside the courtyard. Out of habit, he grabs his cloak and goes to look for her.
The instant the door opens, blood splashes across his face.
Hong Yu grips a long blade, a trail of blood running down her cheek. The last man in black lies at her feet. Corpses litter the courtyard as she stands with her sword in hand. When she raises her eyes to him, she looks just as she did the first time he saw her: outside the capital that year, she swung her sword and cut down bandits, their blood staining the dusk red.
He jolts in shock, but when he looks again, Hong Yu is still holding her blade. "The courtyard is dirty." Her voice is calm, but her fingertips tremble slightly.
He sees it clearly. He feels a little relieved: he has finally begun to truly enter her world. And he feels a little ashamed that only now has he begun to understand her.
Li Ji looks away, steps over the head that has rolled to his feet, and gently lays his cloak over her shoulders. "The night is late and the dew is heavy. Be careful not to catch a chill."
She thinks he doesn't understand her world of flashing blades. He thinks she doesn't love his humble, everyday life.
Neither realizes that he has long since sewn that fleeting glimpse of her into the stitches of the rest of his life, while she has crossed mountains of corpses and seas of blood only to win a peaceful life with him.
You keep your place in the martial world, and I'll keep sewing clothes. There is no difference between the flash of a blade and the work of a needle.
