Mia is a newly turned vampire's thrall, destined to be a blood bag and get bitten every day.
After every meal, the vampire habitually comforts Mia.
The vampire says: Good girl. Once we get our artifact back, we'll be able to live well.
Mia thinks to herself: I'll live well once I kill you.
The vampire says again: I know you're having a hard time. It's all the gods' fault. If you have to curse someone, curse her.
Mia agrees with this. Every night before bed, she curses the goddess three times.

People praise the gods with one hand and beat a fallen enemy with the other.
The old vampire she's with is one who slipped through the net. She seems to be fairly powerful, but can only change her appearance, hide from place to place, steal scraps, and cling to life.
Mia has to go hungry as often as she eats with the vampire. She feels she's joined the worst faction at the worst possible time.
And yet...
When she gets caught by a holy knight, the knight pinches her cheek and lets her go. The vampire explains: She's your third sister.
When she's buried in debt, the richest person in the world scatters gems everywhere to send the creditors packing. The vampire says: She's your sixth sister.
When she falls into the sea, a stunning mermaid kisses her, then tearfully carries her to shore. The vampire says: She's your ninth sister.
When she's imprisoned by a saintess, the vampire rushes over to save her: This one... isn't your sister yet---
Mia grabs the vampire by the collar and yells:
"How many sisters do I have?!"
The vampire scoffs:
"You don't like them? Aren't they your favorite?"
Mia can't deny it, so she asks a different question:
"How many daughters do you have?"
The vampire smiles, baring her long fangs.
"I've lived for a very, very long time. Of course I have lots and lots of daughters."
She takes Mia by the chin. "But do you know? You're actually my first daughter."
Later, Mia hears two crucial pieces of information:
1. The so-called "daughters" are simply what the vampire calls the people she's defeated.
2. The goddess she curses three times every day is none other than herself.
---Mia and this vampire were both born at the dawn of the planet. Not only is she not the vampire's daughter, she's her archenemy.
