In the modern world, the Xu and Ling families are old friends and business tycoons. Ling Zhe'an and Xu Qiyun grew up together and gradually fell in love, but Ling Zhe'an's younger brother, Ling Fu'an, drove a wedge between them, forcing them to part for a while.
The ancient dynasty is fictional.
As Crown Prince, Ling Zhe'an is placed under house arrest by rebels in Linyuan Pavilion. His incompetent father flees, leaving the country in chaos. The Great General Ling Zhe'an marches on the capital with his troops, quells the rebellion, and enthrones the crown prince as emperor.
Ling Zhe'an thought that taking the highest seat of power would let him protect the life of the one he loved. But the waters of court politics were unfathomably deep, and in the end, Xu Qiyun still died. (For now, Xu Qiyun is set to die in battle.) Ling Zhe'an also dies, consumed by grief. (There are many reasons Xu Qiyun is killed. They'll come up later in the story.) Their past-life bond ends here, and their present-day connection begins. (The past-life story will be foreshadowed.)
