Yu Wanchun had always been bold and brilliant, a pampered young lady of precious bearing. She was forever climbing onto roofs and getting into mischief, but after moving with her parents from Jiangnan to the capital, the world around her changed, and she had no choice but to rein herself in.
The capital was a prosperous, wealthy place, but also a den of danger. Even the fortunate were not necessarily destined to enjoy their good fortune.
She curbed her mischievous nature and gave up climbing trees and scaling walls, spending six years in the capital.
Now, she often dreamed of someone and was plagued by nightmares.
The person in her dreams wore a chilling, sinister ghost mask, with cold, ink-black eyes like frozen frost and a deathly stillness about him.
*
Yu Wanchun knew who he was: the emperor's personal guard, commander of the Wuxiao Guard. He never showed his true face in public, always wearing a ghost mask. Everyone in the streets and alleys knew of him. He came and went without a trace, and his methods were bloody and brutal. No one knew how much blood his sword had spilled.
Dreaming of him was no different from seeing a ghost.
*
Yu Wanchun didn't know what it meant.
Still, she promptly packed up and went to a temple to ward off evil, hoping only that she would never become entangled with such an ominous man in this life.
*
But on the way, she met a handsome young man.
At first, Yu Wanchun didn't think much of him. Afterward, though, he kept catching her in all sorts of inappropriate predicaments.
She spoke recklessly and insulted the commander, while he stood silently nearby.
She boldly climbed a wall, only to be spotted by him beneath the tree.
She was injured and in a sorry state, and he happened to be the one who rescued her.
*
Eventually, Yu Wanchun simply stopped caring and insisted that the young constable take her on as his apprentice.
The young man had handsome, clear features. Unable to resist her casual, coaxing plea, his cold-jade-like eartips flushed crimson, and he agreed.
*
Later, circumstances brought her back to her old home in Jiangzhou, where all kinds of figures began appearing in her dreams again.
Yu Wanchun finally began to have her doubts.
*
When the capital's splendor faded and the fires of war spread across Yuliang, the land was thrown into turmoil. Finding someone who truly understood you was no easy thing.
She had thought that the day she met the young constable was their first encounter.
But unexpectedly, the scenes in her dreams all came true, one by one.
Only then did she realize that her true first meeting with the young constable had happened far earlier than she had imagined.
*
It had never been a chance encounter. It was a cautious gaze from afar, a hesitant lingering, never daring to approach.
*
Yu Wanchun smiled without a word. At least he really was a constable... right?
*
That night, the wind and sand stirred restlessly, and leaves rustled down from the trees.
Yu Wanchun raised her eyes and gazed out across an endless sea of blood. A lone, frigid figure stood there.
He stood amid the vast sea of blood, turning his head slightly, both hands stained with blood, like a demon from the underworld. But when he saw Yu Wanchun, the malice vanished from his eyes, and his body stiffened.
Yu Wanchun froze for a moment.
*
A river of blood trailed behind him. He crawled on his knees toward her, his handsome features pale and bloodstained.
The ghost mask that appeared in her dreams again and again, the one that had entangled her in every sort of infatuation, split open inch by inch, revealing bloodied flesh beneath.
She bowed her head, only to meet once more the handsome features of the man who had once been by her side, through thick and thin.
The young constable?
Yu Wanchun looked at the shattered ghost mask scattered across the ground, unable even to smile.
By then, the person before her was no longer cold and aloof. His eyes were red-rimmed, and he humbly, cautiously begged for her forgiveness.
*
It seemed that although she had knelt on a prayer mat and folded her hands in supplication that day, her heart had never truly been sincere. The Buddha had not answered her prayers.
*
She was more than just entangled in a fated misfortune...
Note: This is primarily a romance, and everything serves the romance!
The political scheming is very light, and daily life takes up most of the story.
A mixed bag, not a strong female lead story!
If that bothers you, please don't read!
