Synopsis
The autopsy room of Jiangcheng Public Security Bureau and the criminal investigation unit are separated by a short corridor, yet it feels as if the boundary between life and death lies between them. Twenty-four-year-old detective Shuang Yanxu always knocks on that heavy door at daybreak, waiting for twenty-one-year-old forensic pathologist Lu Qingtang to look up. Her cool, composed features carry the scent of formalin, and the strength of stitching up a corpse still lingers in her fingertips. Yet when she sees Shuang Yanxu, ripples appear in her eyes, ones no one else has ever seen.
They are sisters in name only, brought together by a fire twelve years ago that consumed everything. When the old building where Shuang Yanxu lived collapsed in flames, Lu Qingtang had been wandering outside in a fit of pique. When she turned back, all she saw was a towering blaze and Shuang Yanxu, covered in wounds, in the arms of her adoptive parents. The disaster took Shuang Yanxu's parents, but bound the two girls' fates tightly together. Lu Qingtang became a forensic pathologist, searching for the truth in cold corpses as if to make amends for not having been there that day. Shuang Yanxu put on a police uniform and fought darkness with decisive action, instinctively shielding Lu Qingtang behind her. But as they investigated scenes side by side again and again, she realized that this “older sister's care” had long since changed into something else.
At the chemical plant where a charred corpse was found, Lu Qingtang identified the killer from subtle marks on the victim's bones, and Shuang Yanxu shielded her from flying glass during the chase. The victims of a serial killer all wore the same style of pinky ring. As Lu Qingtang touched cold skin on the autopsy table, Shuang Yanxu, keeping watch at a bar, would unconsciously rub her knuckles, the very spot Lu Qingtang had once gripped tightly when nervous. In a transnational smuggling case, a victim's kidney had gone missing. The two followed the clues to the docks, where, in the shadow of a shipping container, Shuang Yanxu kissed Lu Qingtang for the first time, with the saltiness of seawater and a tremor that did not know where it belonged.
Neither Captain Zhang's tacit approval, Wen Jingran's warning, nor the adoptive parents' journey from shock to acceptance and sighs could stop a love that was growing wildly at the edge of taboo. But the fire left more than scars. It also left the stubbornness and unease deep in Lu Qingtang's bones, and the helplessness Shuang Yanxu faced whenever she confronted darkness. When Lin Hao's knife cut through Shuang Yanxu's carotid artery, Lu Qingtang was holding a scalpel, searching another corpse for the last clue he had left behind. As blood spread across her white coat, she finally understood that some wounds can never be stitched closed, just as that fire had burned away the past and was destined to consume the illusion they had pieced together over the rest of their lives, the one they called “home.”
The lights at the end of the corridor flicker on and off, like the words between them that have never been spoken. One searches for proof of life in death; the other protects the warmth of those on the verge of death. In the end, they both become the hottest and most scorching embers in each other's lives.
Theme: Forbidden feelings take root amid professional ties and the shadow of a fire, and ultimately become embers that can never spread into a blaze.
